                                       Prescription Medication

Prescription medications are those drugs regulated by federal and state law that require that a healthcare provider complete a periodic examination of the a patient before authorizing the use of the medication.  We abide by these prescription drug laws and require examination prior to dispensing medications.  The frequency of examination and the type of monitoring of the drug depend on the type of medication in question.  There are many drugs in use in our practice.  We will advise you of the specific monitoring and examination requirements for each drug at the time of need.

We provide a convenient and well stocked on site pharmacy for your convenience.  Approximately 95% of all medications that we may need to dispense are located on site.  There are a few medications that are uncommonly used or are best prepared in an alternate form for easier dosing of your pet.  For those occassions where we do not have what you need in stock, we use the resources of an outside compounding pharmacy. We can often save you a significant amount of money and improve your pet's life at the same time by working with a compounding pharmacy to create a customized medication for your pet's dosing needs.  Whether we provide the medication at the time of your visit or have it compounded and shipped in, we work very hard to provide affordable and competitive pricing for all medications.  Our emphasis at Lakewood Animal Hospital is providing medical and surgical services.  The on-site pharmacy service is an element of providing convenient medical service for you and your pet.

We realize that for some medications there is sometimes extremely aggressive pricing available through on-line outlets.  It is completely understandable and acceptable if you would like to take advantage of these specials.  We are happy to provide you a written prescription upon request.  You may fill this prescription at the pharmacy of your choice.  There are a few guidelines that we would like to make you aware of regarding the purchase of on-line medications.

A. Some on-line re-sellers have obtained their product through channels not authorized by the manufacturer.  In these cases, the manufacturer may choose to void all warranty as to the drug's safety and efficacy in the event that your pet has a problem with the medication.  A good route to avoiding this problem is to ask and obtain from the on-line pharmacy, a written statement or declaration that all medication warranties and privileges are intact from the manufacturer when purchased through their site.  You may then confirm this directly with the individual manufacturer.  A reputable re-seller should be able to readily be able to provide you this information.

B. State of Idaho Pharmacy law requires that only mail order/on-line pharmacies licensed to do business in our state may fill prescriptions to customers in our state.  This protects you as the consumer.  Licensure of the pharmacy means you have a means of seeking legal remedy if the pharmacy does not fulfill its duties to you as the consumer.  For your protection and to maintain compliance with state pharmacy rules, we verify that a requesting out of state pharmacy is licensed to do business in Idaho.  You may verify this information as well by going to The Idaho Board of Pharmacy web page  and searching the "mail order pharmacy list" for the pharmacy that you wish to use.

C. Provided that a valid prescription can be provided and the pharmacy in question is properly licensed in Idaho, we can provide a written prescription to you without cost.  This will be available for pick up at our office within one business day of the verification of the listed guidelines.  You may then directly submit this prescription to your chosen pharmacy.
